As many of you are aware, John Brock had some health issues this term that required him to leave in the middle of the term. I am very pleased to announce that he will be back this spring. So anyone regretting that they had missed the opportunity to take a course from him, fear not -- he will be back!

New Faculty Starting Fall 2012

The subject line says it all -- the department is searching for two new tenure-track faculty. While I cannot say who they will be, the plan is for them to start Fall 2012. This should allow us to offer a wider range of courses more frequently.

At present, we have 330 applicants for the two slots so I anticipate being able to bring some great new talent to the classroom.

More information will be forthcoming as the search begins to narrow.

Additional course for Spring 2012

The department will be offering Econ 4500: Money and Banking this spring. This offering will be Thursday from 4:30-7:05. The instructor will be Jim Poole who brings years of experience working in the banking sector to the course.

If you are looking for something different for the summer, you might want to look into the course below:

"There are still openings for the Guatemala field course this summer; however, if you do not contact Curt Holder (cholder@uccs.edu) by Friday, 25 March 2011 at 5 p.m. you will not be able to go on this journey and you will not be able to register for this summer course. You do not need to be a Geography major to enroll. There are no prerequisites for the course.

This field course will be from 22 May (two days after commencement ceremonies) to 5 June 2011. If you plan on graduating in Spring 2011, you can still enroll in the course as an unclassified student. Also, you can still plan to take additional courses during the summer 2011 because we will return from Guatemala before the beginning of summer classes.

There are two requirements for the trip: 1) you must enroll in GES 446 for the summer semester (this is a 4 credit course) and 2) you must be flexible and open-minded.

Below is the payment schedule for the trip:

$850 deposit due: 15 March 2011
$500 payment due: 8 April 2011
$300 payment due: 29 April 2011

The total amount of payments for the trip before 29 April 2011 totals $1650.00. This price includes airfare, hotels, transportation, and park fees, but does not include food, course tuition, passports, and vaccinations. Because the airplane tickets will be nonrefundable to save on expenses, the following cancellation schedule will apply:

now – 29 March: All payments will be refunded
30 March – 13 May: All but $850 will be refunded
On or after 14 May: NO money will be refunded

Just a heads-up -- the fall catalog has left John Brock off of the faculty list. Not to worry -- he will be here. The adjustment to the new student information system inadvertently converted a number of people to staff (not just Dr. Brock). The powers-that-be are working on it.

Schedule Changes for Spring 2010

A quick update on department offerings for Spring 2010. First, the Winterim course, Econ 398: Inner Economist, is being cancelled today due to low enrollment (off regular term courses have higher enrollment caps because of campus budgetary constraints).

Second, section 4 of Econ 101 has been cancelled and replaced with an additional section of Econ 202 at the same time/same place. Sorry for any inconvenience with this switch but our 202 offerings were close to full while we had plenty of spare capacity in 101.

Also, the schedule for next summer is basically set. There will be one section of Econ 202 during the regular 8 week summer session and an offering of Econ 341: International Economics during the May intersession. Change in major requirements

The department is altering one portion of the requirements for the major. Currently, either Math 112 or Math 135 is required for graduation; starting next fall that requirement will not longer be in force. Of course, requirement changes always take some time to phase-in, but I will now waive that requirement for anyone who has not completed it.

Math 135 is still strongly advised (you won't get in without it!) for anyone planning on continuing on for graduate work in economics.
